Dr. Rachel Lotan

Professor Emerita

Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education.

Dr. Lotan is Professor Emerita, at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education. She served as Director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) from 1999-2014. Currently, she directs the Program for Complex Instruction at Stanford, where she continues to lead research and dissemination of Complex Instruction, a pedagogical approach for building equitable classrooms. Dr. Lotan’s work lies at the intersection of research on teaching and learning, sociology of the classroom and schools, and teaching as a profession. She focuses on the conditions necessary to create equal-status participation of students in academically, linguistically, culturally, and socially heterogeneous classrooms. Dr. Lotan authored and co-authored numerous articles, book chapters, technical reports, and presented at international and national conferences and educational organizations. In 2014, she published the 3rd edition of Designing Groupwork: Strategies for the Heterogeneous Classroom, originally authored by E.G. Cohen, and currently works on the 4th edition.
